Summer brings plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors – from morning walks and gardening to family gatherings and community events.
At Navion Senior Living, we know staying active and social is an important part of healthy aging, though warmer temperatures can also pose health risks. But with a few simple precautions, seniors can safely soak up all the fun the season has to offer.
Why Seniors Are More Sensitive to Heat
As we age, the body becomes less efficient at regulating temperature. Certain health conditions and medications can also increase the risk of dehydration or overheating.
That’s why it’s important to recognize the warning signs of heat-related illness early. Watch for symptoms such as:
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Weakness
- Muscle cramps
- Nausea
- Excessive sweating
- Unusually dry skin
If you experience any of these symptoms while out in the heat, get indoors to cool off in the AC and hydrate immediately. If symptoms don’t improve quickly, seek medical attention.
Ways to Stay Cool and This Summer
Stay Indoors During Peak Heat
Try to avoid spending long periods outside during the hottest hours of the day, typically late afternoon. Planning errands, walks or outdoor activities in the morning or evening can help reduce the risk of overheating.
Dress for the Weather
Choose lightweight, loose-fitting and breathable clothing made from fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking materials. Light-colored clothing can also help reflect heat and keep the body cooler.
Protect Yourself From the Sun
When spending time outdoors, wear sunscreen with SPF protection, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. These simple steps help protect both your skin and eyes from harmful UV rays while keeping you more comfortable in the heat.
Take Frequent Cooling Breaks
Whether gardening, walking or attending outdoor events, be sure to rest regularly in shaded or air-conditioned spaces. Even short breaks from the heat can help your body recover and regulate temperature more effectively.
Avoid Overexertion
High temperatures can place extra strain on the body, especially for older adults. Pace yourself during outdoor activities and avoid strenuous exercise or intense yardwork during extreme heat.
Don’t Forget to Hydrate!
Hydration is essential to summer wellness. And remember, you may not always feel thirsty, even when your body needs fluids.
To stay hydrated:
- Drink water consistently throughout the day
- Carry a reusable water bottle when outside
- Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, oranges and strawberries
- Limit excessive caffeine or alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration
Signs of dehydration may include dry mouth, fatigue, confusion or dark-colored urine.
